Slain Alabama ‘coach, mentor, community leader’ leaves behind 15 children

The children of a man shot to death in Talladega County two weeks ago are asking for help with their father’s burial.

Michael Wells, 45, was killed on Aug. 15 near his Sylacauga home. He left behind 15 children.

“This GoFundMe will be to help pay for his funeral expenses and take some of the wight off of his children,’’ daughter Tia-Symona Wells wrote on the fundraising site.

Medics and Talladega County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched that Thursday afternoon to Pine Hill Lane in the Odena community of Sylacauga. Wells was pronounced dead on the scene.

No arrests have been made in his killing, and Central Alabama Crime Stoppers is offering a reward starting at $1,000 for information in the case.

Wells was a graduate of Childersburg High School, where he received a scholarship to study and play basketball at Auburn University at Montgomery.

He owned his own law care service and was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Freemason, according to his obituary.

“Michael was a father, a coach, a mentor, and a leader to the community,’’ the obituary read. “He was an all-around great person, protector, and provider for not only his children and family but others who he grew to love.”

“He gave his all to the students he coached whether it was on or off the court or field,’’ according to the obituary. “He could shoot a basketball like no other, on one leg over the powerline, because he was ‘Mr. Like That’ as he called himself.”
