‘Significant damage’ in Troy after tornado hit recreation center, buildings
The Troy Recreation Center and Sportsplex sustained major damage during a reported tornado early Sunday morning, but no injuries are reported among the more than 200 people who sheltered there.
The Troy Parks and Recreation Department posted on Facebook Sunday morning.
“We are thankful the Lord provided protection over our community, and over 200 guests at the Recreation Center storm shelter, on Saturday night.”
Nancy Jo Adams posted about the experience on Facebook.
“When it took the roof off, the suction in our ears was awful. There was no mistaking what was happening… I have no idea what it looks like outside but it’s a mess In here. I am thankful for a safe place for us to be. The Troy Parks and Recreation did a great job keeping us safe and as comfortable as possible.”
The extent of damage in Troy and surrounding areas was not immediately clear.
Elsewhere in Pike County, crews reported downed power lines and damaged buildings.
Two people are reported dead in Dallas County.
Several areas in central Alabama, including Calera, Gordo, Maplesville, Pletcher and Sipsey, reported damage during Saturday’s tornado outbreak.
There were multiple confirmed tornadoes in Tuscaloosa, Cullman, Pickens and Pike counties.
Local officials still are working to assess damage, injuries and possible fatalities across the state as of Sunday morning.
