Shots fired in Alabama traffic stop to keep motorcyclist from being arrested, sheriff’s office says

Two men were taken into custody Thursday morning in connection with a 2022 traffic stop during which shots were fired in east Alabama.

In December, according to the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy stopped a man on a stolen motorcycle in the DeArmanville community when another person drove by and fired several shots with a pistol.

No one was injured by that gunfire.

An investigation was immediately launched by the sheriff’s office, the Oxford Police Department, the FBI’s North Alabama Violent Crime Task Force and several other agencies, said sheriff’s Lt. Falon Hurst.

Thomas Griffith, 24, of Anniston was the motorcyclist that had been stopped. The motorcycle was stolen.

Investigators determine that Griffith had conspired with 31-year-old Charles Kilgore, of Heflin, to have Kilgore drive past and fire shots in hopes that the deputy would pursue Kilgore and not arrest Griffith, Hurst said.

This morning, the FBI arrested both suspects on charges being a felon in possession of a firearm. Hurst said both likely will also face state charges.

“Let this be an indication to all that gunplay around law enforcement officers will absolutely not be tolerated,’’ Hurst said. “We will aggressively investigate, and we will find you. It is not worth it.”
