Shots fired during police chase, manhunt that began in Vestavia Hills, ended in Birmingham

Shots were fired during an overnight police chase that began in Vestavia Hills and ended in Birmingham.

Vestavia Hills police Capt. Shane Ware said the incident began about 1 a.m. Friday when officers began to pursue a vehicle on I-65. The chase traveled into northern Birmingham where two suspects – believed to be a male and a female – were taken into custody.

A third suspect – believed to be a male – fled on foot.

Ware said it was during the foot pursuit that shots were fired. He did not say who fired the shots.

No officers were injured. The third suspect has not been found.

The manhunt lasted from about 1 a.m. until about 4:30 a.m.

Multiple law enforcement officers were on the scene including Birmingham police and Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies. Drones and the county’s Star 1 helicopter were also used during the search.

Ware said he could not release any additional details.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation is leading the probe.
