Shoplifting trial for Huntsville Councilman Devyn Keith rescheduled

Huntsville City Councilman Devyn Keith has a new trial date set for the second time this month.

Keith, facing four counts of misdemeanor theft related to arrests on shoplifting charges, will now go to trial on Aug. 22 in Madison County district court before Judge Patty Demos. It will be a bench trial, meaning there will be no jury and the judge will render the verdict.

Demos entered an order on Friday with the new date. Neither prosecutors nor Keith’s attorney filed a motion with the court asking for his previous trial date of June 28 to be rescheduled.

Keith’s original trial date, May 9, was postponed at the request of his attorney, John Taylor, after issues arose reviewing video surveillance evidence, according to a court filing. Prosecutors raised no objection and the trial was moved to June 28.

Keith has pleaded not guilty to the four misdemeanor charges he is facing connecting with merchandise police say he took from Huntsville Walmarts in February.
