Shootout in southwest Birmingham leaves 1 man dead, 2 injured
A shootout in west Birmingham late Wednesday left one man dead and two others injured.
Just before midnight, West Precinct officers were dispatched to Fire Station 20 on Avenue W after two men showed up there with gunshot wounds, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Both of those men were taken to the hospital. One of them has life-threatening injuries, Fitzgerald said.
Officers then learned a third man was taken by private vehicle to Princeton Baptist Medical Center. That man was pronounced dead a short time later by hospital staff.
Fitzgerald said the city’s gunfire detection system – Shot Spotter – indicated shots fired in the 1600 block of Fulton Avenue S.W.
“We believe shots were exchanged between two groups,’’ he said. “All three gunshot victims were struck by gunfire and detectives believe they were not bystanders.”
Investigators are working to determine the victims’ involvement in the shootout.
No arrests have been announced.
The deadly shooting is Birmingham’s 96th homicide this year. Of those, one was an officer involved shooting by an outside law enforcement agency and seven others have been ruled justifiable and therefore not deemed criminal.
In all of Jefferson County, there have been 136 homicides including the 96 in Birmingham.
