Shooting during party at Birmingham Airbnb leaves 1 dead

A shooting during a party at a Birmingham Airbnb early Sunday left one man dead.

Birmingham police identified the victim as Phong Nguyen. He was 21 and lived in Birmingham.

West Precinct officers were dispatched at 2:35 a.m. to a report of a person shot in the 900 block of Dugan Avenue.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald said police entered the house and found Nguyen unresponsive inside. Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service pronounced him dead on the scene.

Fitzgerald said the house is a short-term rental Airbnb. There was a party or gathering being held there when someone fired shots.

Detectives are working to learn what events led to the victim being shot and also if the suspect or suspects were inside at the party or outside.

There is no one in custody.

Nguyen is Birmingham’s 19th homicide this year. Of those, two have been ruled justifiable and therefore are not deemed criminal.

In all of Jefferson County, there have been 24 homicides including the 19 in Birmingham.
