Shooting at Tuscaloosa community center kills 23-year-old man

A 23-year-old man was killed in a Saturday shooting at a Tuscaloosa community center.

Police were dispatched at 4 p.m. to a report of a shooting at McDonald Hughes Community Center on Martin Luther King Boulevard.

Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit Capt. Jack Kennedy said the wounded man was rushed to DCH Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Kennedy said the shooting happened during a private event at the center.

Investigators spoke with multiple witnesses, reviewed video footage, interviewed the shooter, and processed the scene for physical evidence.

“Issues of self-defense are present in this case, and at this time, no arrests have been made,’’ Kennedy said.

Once the investigation is complete, the evidence will be presented to a Tuscaloosa County grand jury to determine charges, if any, he said.

The name of the slain man has not been released.
