Shelby County police chase of theft suspect leads to Chilton County manhunt

A manhunt for a theft suspect and his girlfriend continued Tuesday morning by multiple law enforcement agencies.

The ordeal began Monday afternoon with a retail theft in Alabaster Monday and ended with a vehicle pursuit that traveled from Shelby County to Chilton County.

Authorities said Alabaster police began the pursuit, and Calera police then assisted. Police deployed spike strips, but that was unsuccessful.

Once the chase got to Chilton County, deputies there also joined in.

The suspect tried to ram at least one police. He eventually ditched his vehicle and fled on foot.

The search went into the night and then resumed Tuesday morning.

Chilton County Sheriff John Shearon identified the suspects as John Christopher Carmada and Zelda Resha. Both are believed to have outstanding warrants, and Carmada could be a federal fugitive.

The search is taking place in the Union Grove area, near Archers Chapel Methodist Protestant Church. Local landowners allowed authorities to access their property and made them aware of potential hiding spots.

Shearon said the suspects were spotted Tuesday morning. He said they don’t know if Carmada is armed but are considering that possibility.

Chilton County deputies and Calera police remain on the scene, as well as federal agents, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency and the Alabama Department of Corrections tracking dogs.

Shearon said rain is hampering efforts to get the state helicopter in the air, and also providing a challenge for tracking dogs.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
