Sheffield City Schools athletic trainer dies in car accident

The athletic trainer for Sheffield City Schools died in a car accident Thursday night in Mississippi while returning from a varsity basketball game, the school system announced Friday.

Jason McGee died in the accident in Iuka, Miss., the school system said in a Facebook post, describing him as “our school district’s beloved athletic trainer.”

According to WTVA in Tupelo, McGee’s vehicle was struck by an 18-wheeler on U.S. 72 as he was pulling onto the highway. Sheffield City Schools said the accident remains under investigation.

In the school system Facebook post, athletic director David Hufstedler characterized Jason as having a constant smile and the “biggest laugh of anybody around.”

“That ever-present smile will always be remembered as well as that big laugh of his that you could hear coming down the hall,” Hufstedler said. “He always let our students know he cared for them.”
