Shawn Murphy in the transfer portal as Alabama roster shakeup continues
Alabama football’s week of turnover didn’t stop just because Kalen DeBoer got in front of a microphone on Saturday.
Three more players entered the portal while DeBoer was introduced as Alabama’s head football coach. A pair of defensive backs reportedly entered before the press conference, including a former five-star, and later in the day, linebacker Shawn Murphy joined.
Murphy, a four-star inside linebacker prospect from the class of 2022, made five tackles in 18 career games. He also deflected one pass, working on special teams while earning late-game defensive snaps in blowouts. Murphy appeared in 13 of the Tide’s 14 games this past fall.
The Tide will return starting linebackers Deontae Lawson and Jihaad Campbell, assuming neither go into the portal after Saban’s retirement. Alabama and Washington players have till early February to decide their futures before the spring transfer window.
DeBoer met with players on Friday night after landing in Tuscaloosa. Speaking to reporters, DeBoer explained his pitch to convince players to stay for his debut season.
“Give me a chance to show you a few of the things. I’m gonna listen to you. I’m gonna meet you where you’re at right now and try to show them through proof of things that have happened, whether it’s at Washington or, we haven’t got into much beyond that, but what this will look like.”
Senior running back Roydell Williams also announced his transfer to Florida State, the fourth UA player to join Mike Norvell and the Seminoles.
