Severe weather possible tonight and Sunday in Alabama

Strong to severe storms will be possible in Alabama starting tonight and lasting into the day on Sunday.

A few tornadoes, damaging winds, hail and heavy rain will all be possible.

Since severe weather will be possible during the overnight hours it’s important that Alabamians have a reliable way of getting severe weather warnings that could wake them up if needed. Weather radios or smartphone apps are two methods — but make sure your phone is not set on silent when you go to bed tonight.

The National Weather Service is expecting a line of storms to approach Alabama later tonight and slowly push eastward across the state through part of the day on Sunday.

Most of the day today will be on the dry and hot side, but storms will approach from the northwest later tonight.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center is maintaining a Level 2 out of 5 (slight) risk for severe weather for much of west Alabama starting tonight.

A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.

Storms could reach northwest Alabama by 9 p.m. or later tonight, according to the National Weather Service in Huntsville.

The weather service in Birmingham expects storms to reach the western part of central Alabama by 1 a.m. Sunday.

Storms are expected to track eastward overnight, and a Level 2 risk will cover a large part of the state on Sunday.

Here’s the severe weather outlook for Sunday, which runs from 7 a.m. Sunday until 7 a.m. Monday:

Severe weather will be possible across most of Alabama on Sunday. Areas in yellow will have a Level 2 out of 5 risk.SPC

Forecasters said once the line of storms moves through then the threat for severe weather will be over.

Rain could linger into Monday, but no more severe weather is expected for the rest of next week in Alabama.

Another round of record highs will be possible in Alabama on Saturday, but temperatures are expected to fall behind the cold front.

The weather service said frost and freeze conditions will be possible for the northern half of the state on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
