Severe weather possible in Alabama over the weekend
Confidence in the possibility of severe weather in parts of Alabama on Sunday has slightly increased, according to forecasters.
But Alabama enters an unsettled weather pattern today that could lead to storms every day through next week.
The first chance for storms will come today for southwest Alabama. Then more storms are expected in north and north-central Alabama on Sunday afternoon into Sunday night.
There could be additional storms on Monday as well.
The strongest storms could have wind gusts that could take down trees and power lines, in addition to hail, lightning and heavy rain. No tornadoes are expected.
NOAA has added a Level 1 risk for severe weather for a sliver of southwest Alabama for today. Below is today’s severe weather outlook:
Storms will be possible starting this afternoon.
Then the SPC has expanded a Level 2 out of 5 risk for severe weather for Sunday to include more of north Alabama and part of northwest Alabama. (Sunday’s severe weather outlook is at the top of this post.)
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
The rest of north Alabama and the northern part of central Alabama have a Level 1 severe weather risk on Sunday, meaning that isolated severe storms will be possible.
The timing of storms on Sunday is still a bit on the uncertain side. The National Weather Service said storms will be possible starting on Sunday afternoon as a cold front approaches the state.
Then, forecasters said, there is a possibility that additional storms could develop to the north and move in to Alabama during the overnight hours. However, confidence in this was still on the low side as of Saturday morning.
No severe weather is expected for south Alabama on Sunday, but rain and storms will be possible there as well.
However, that will change on Monday. The Storm Prediction Center has added a Level 1 risk for the southern half of Alabama to its Day 3 severe weather outlook:
Monday’s storms are also expected to have damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.
