Severe storms expected today; tornado watch in effect
A second round of severe thunderstorms continued to pelt parts of north Alabama early Thursday morning, and another tornado watch continued for that part of the state as well as central Alabama.
The tornado watch will be in effect until 10 a.m. CDT Thursday.
The Storm Prediction Center said that a couple of tornadoes will be possible in the watch area, which also includes part of Mississippi and Tennessee.
Large hail is also a concern as well as wind gusts up to 70 mph.
The Alabama counties in the tornado watch are Colbert, Cullman, DeKalb, Fayette, Franklin, Jackson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Marion, Marshall, Morgan, Walker, Winston, Blount, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Etowah, Jefferson, Randolph and St. Clair.
A line of strong to severe storms was stretched across north Alabama early Thursday. SPC forecasters said the storms will move from northwest to southeast across the watch area through the morning.
Severe storms continued to affect north Alabama early Thursday morning after a destructive night that included multiple tornado warnings for the city of Huntsville and a tornado emergency for DeKalb County.
The extent of the damage across north Alabama was not known before sunrise, but emergency managers early this morning reported major damage in the DeKalb County town of Henagar.
The overnight storms were confined to north-central and northeast Alabama. Today’s storms could make it much farther southward through the day and have the potential to intensify with the heat of the day.
The Storm Prediction Center has a Level 3 out of 5 risk for severe weather in place for central and south Alabama today.
A Level 3, or enhanced risk, means that numerous severe storms will be possible.
The threat for storms will continue through tonight and into Friday, and a Level 1 risk will be in place on Friday for part of south Alabama:
