Selma has ‘significant’ damage from possible tornado: ‘I hear a baby crying’
Severe storms have caused damage in Selma, according to early reports on social media.
The National Weather Service is asking people to avoid the area.
“There is confirmed damage in Selma. Please stay out of the area to let first responders navigate the roads. We will update as we know more, but please let emergency personnel respond,” EMA said in a tweet.
WSFA is reporting at least one person is believed trapped in a building on Broad Street. Another person may be missing, the station said, quoting Selma Mayor James Perkins.
“Selma has received significant damage from the tornado. Citizens please refrain from traveling the roadways and stay away from down power lines. City crews will be out as soon as practical to clean up. In the meantime, stay safe and continue to report your damages through 911. #wearetogether,” Perkins said in a statement.
Emergency response teams are on the ground, he added. People are asked to stay in place until further notice.
Selma Police Chief Kenta Fulford told WSFA they are unclear how much damage has been caused by the tornado. The damage is concentrated south of Highland Avenue. Several vehicles have been tossed around.
Selma schools are on a weather lockdown.
The National Weather Service is also reporting damage in Autauga County, located east of Dallas County.
