See who will compete in the North-South basketball game

Class 6A championship game hero Fred Derrick of Buckhorn and high-scoring Central-Phenix City guard Jacoby Hill are two of the players selected to compete in this summer’s North-South All-Star Basketball Game in Montgomery.

Derrick’s steal in the final seconds of the 6A title game earlier this month sealed Buckhorn’s second straight state title win over Mountain Brook. Hill has led his team to back-to-back final fours and, on Saturday, was named to the Class 7A first-team All-State team for the second consecutive year.

The girls rosters are led by Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year Ace Austin of Spring Garden, Good Hope’s Ava McSwain and the Trinity duo of Francie Morris and Maddie Smith. The Wildcats have won two straight state titles.

“This group is collectively one of the most experienced groups we have seen selected in quite some time,” said Brandon Dean, director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association. “Twenty-three of the players selected participated in the AHSAA 2024 State Championships at the BJCC earlier this winter, and five earned state tourney MVP honors after leading their teams to the state title.”

The 15-member rosters are comprised of rising seniors from across the state. All-Star Sports Week is scheduled for July 15-19.

The teams split the games last summer at the Cramton Bowl Multi-Plex in Montgomery. The North girls won 80-44 to improve to 23-3 in the annual series, and the South boys won 81-79 on a last-second shot by JAG’s Jamicah Adair. The North holds a 50-30 edge in the series which was first play in 1953.

Coaches for the boys teams are Vestavia Hills’ Patrick Davis and Covenant Christian’s Bret Waldrep (North) and Hillcrest-Evergreen’s Tereance Pinkney (Hillcrest-Evergreen) and Loachapoka’s Sheroderick Smith (South). Pinkney was just named Class 3A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

Girls coaches are Southside-Gadsden’s Justin Bowen and Hartselle’s Amber Deline (North) and Trinity’s Blake Smith and Carroll’s Jermel Bell (South).
