See who shined as teams took home AHSAA soccer championships and what’s on deck next

The first set of soccer champions were crowned in Huntsville.

Among the victors at John Hunt Park were some teams plenty familiar with hoisting trophies — Westminster’s girls claimed their third straight title — and others who brought home a long-awaited championship back home, including St. John Paul II’s girls and Guntersville’s boys.

Other situations were a little different.

Lee-Scott’s girls claimed an AHSAA Class 1A-3A title in their first year as full AHSAA members, capping off an incredible season for the Warriors.

Meanwhile, Collinsville’s boys claimed the program’s first state championship since 2013 with a glimmering 5-2 victory over Tuscaloosa Academy that saw a community pack the stands in Huntsville.

Westminster-Oak Mountain’s boys completed a revenge tour for its first state title; the Knights fell in the semifinals in 2023 and lost in the championship game last season before claiming this year’s 4A title.

With all of those great stories, there’s plenty more on deck for the final day of the AHSAA soccer season on Saturday.

In the meantime, here’s what to know from Friday and looking ahead to the final day of high school soccer games in Alabama:

TOP PERFORMANCES

1. St. John Paul II star has MVP performance

Ella Cazzavillan scored a pair of goals, logged an assist and claimed Class 4A state tournament MVP as St. John Paul II beat St. Luke’s Episcopal 3-1 for the Class 4A state title. The school record-holder for goals and assists will play soccer at NCAA Division II Pittsburg State University.

2. One of the state’s best adds to career

Guntersville star A.J. Shumate scored a pair of goals in the second half of the Class 5A state championship to lead the Wildcats to a 2-0 victory over Indian Springs. He finished his career with a state-record 212 career goals and 50 goals on the season.

3. Hat trick in a big win

Westminster-Oak Mountain’s Charlie Krulak scored a trio of goals and added an assist as the Knights beat Oneonta 6-0 in the Class 4A state championship game. He claimed the state tournament MVP award following the victory.

4. A pair of assists

Annie Collier logged assists on both goals and claimed Class 5A tournament MVP as Westminster Christian picked up a 2-1 victory over St. Michael in the state title game. She also had the final penalty kick in a semifinal victory over Springville on Wednesday.
