With the holiday season finished, high school basketball teams open the New Year as postseason area tournaments are less than a month away.

Most teams will start area play this week, competing for seeding as the year progresses.

Throughout the remainder of the season, the AL.com staff will select the top five performances in the Birmingham area in both boys and girls competition from the previous week of play.
