Mortimer Jordan junior Brodie Christmas continued his undefeated season, winning two matches at the AHSAA Class 1A-4A North Super Sectional wrestling tournament on Friday at Bill Harris Arena at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

The South Super Sectional tournament is in Montgomery.

Christmas, now 33-0 this season, isn’t alone.

Several wrestlers in the North Super Sectional remained undefeated and advanced to the championship match in their respective weight classes as Classes 7A, 6A and 1A-4A competed at the CrossPlex. Those classifications will finish Saturday, followed by the entire 5A Super Sectional.

Other 6A wrestlers who stayed undefeated Friday were Gardendale’s Isaiah Powe (50-0) at 145 pounds; Gardendale’s Daishun Powe (51-0) at 152 pounds; and Decatur’s Oliver Howard (21-0) at 160 pounds.

In 1A-4A, wrestlers who stayed undefeated include Dora’s Jayden Rouse (38-0) at 120 pounds; Dora’s Damon Clayton (33-0) at 132 pounds; Weaver’s Joshua Johannson (37-0) at 170 pounds and Dora’s Jonathan Foster (35-0) at 182 pounds.

All of the undefeated wrestlers are scheduled to compete for Super Section titles Saturday. The top six Super Sectional finishers in each weight class in Classes 7A, 6A and 1A-4A advance to next week’s state tournament in Huntsville. In Class 5A, the top four finishes in each weight class advance to the state tournament.

Christmas, Daishon Powe, Johannson and Foster all won individual state titles in 2022 and moved up at least one weight class this season.

SOUTH SUPER SECTIONAL

Ranburne High School took a slim lead in Class 1A/4A over Saint James Friday after Friday’s first day of wrestling action as the 2023 AHSAA Wrestling South Super Section tourney wrapped action.

The Bulldogs, led by senior 285-pounder Carson Hall, totaled 143.5 points with Saint James second at 137.5.  In Class 6A, Homewood took a commanding 189 – 129 lead over McAdory after day one of the 6A competition, and in Class 7A, Smiths Station posted 165 points with Enterprise in second place with 151. Some semifinal matches were still out Friday night at 9:45 p.m.

All three divisions moved wrestlers into the finals Friday with the championship matches and placement matches taking place at 10 a.m. The consolation semifinals will kick off the action at 8:30 a.m.

Class 5A begins if Super Section at 11:30 a.m., with finals set for 4:30 Saturday afternoon.

The same schedule will be followed at Birmingham’s CrossPlex Bill Harris Arena Saturday.

McAdory High School senior Aiden Knight post three wins Friday at 170 pounds to advance to the Class 6A South Super Section wrestling finals. He moves into his final match Saturday with a perfect 83-0 record.

In the Class 1A/4A division, Ranburne’s Hall moved closer to a third straight state championship winning his first two matches in 34 and 29 seconds respectively. The Air Force football signee takes a 44-0 record into Saturday’s 285-pound finals with 38 wins by pin, five by forfeit and one match all season that was decided by points.
