A second suspect has been arrested and charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a 43-year-old woman last month in Birmingham, police said Friday.

Michael Spellman, 62, of Birmingham, was found by patrol officers riding a bicycle Thursday near 9th Avenue West and 1st Street West when he was taken into custody.

Spellman was booked into the Birmingham City Jail.

On Friday, detectives obtained a warrant for capital murder (kidnapping) for Spellman in connection with the Jan. 15 slaying of 43-year-old Genise Carter.

Carter was dead in the 1200 block of 18th Street North.

Police did not initially find any signs of foul play in Carter’s death but an autopsy determined she was shot.

Spellman is being held in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.

On Thursday, Birmingham police announced the arrest of Jayden Gildersleeve, a 21-year-old Midfield man who was charged with capital murder and first-degree kidnapping in Carter’s slaying.
