Second school board member arrested for allegedly revealing grand jury secrets

A second Escambia County School Board member has been arrested for allegedly revealing grand jury secrets.

Cindy Jackson was arrested Monday and indicted for allegedly obtaining and disclosing information from a grand jury subpoena, according to court records.

Jackson’s arrest and indictment comes after fellow school board member Sherry Digmon, who is also publisher and co-owner of the Atmore News, was charged in late October with the same offense.

Atmore News reporter Don Fletcher was also arrested at the same time as Digmon, as was Ashley Fore, a bookkeeper at the school system.

The arrests stemmed from an Oct. 25 article on an Escambia County District Attorney’s Office investigation into federal COVID-19 funds that were possibly improperly paid to seven former Escambia County School System employees, the newspaper said on its Facebook page.

A sidebar accompanying the main article on the investigation reported phones belonging to Digmon and Jackson were seized by sheriff’s deputies.

Both Digmon and Jackson voted against renewing Superintendent Michele McClung’s contract — an issue that has deeply divided the Escambia County School Board.
