Second inmate stabbed to death at Donaldson prison since Saturday
A 29-year-old inmate was stabbed to death Monday at William Donaldson Correctional Facility – the third to die since the weekend and the second knifing victim since Saturday.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said the inmate, whose name has not yet been released, died about 6:21 p.m. Monday.
The inmate “sustained sharp instrument injuries from another inmate,” the office stated in a news release. The death is being investigated as a homicide.
Two inmates at William Donaldson Correctional Facility died over the weekend, one of whom was the victim of a homicide.
Timmy Wilson, 66, died Friday night of what is believed to be natural causes. Denarieya Letrex Smith, 30, died early Saturday of a “sharp force” instrument in what is being investigated as a homicide.
So far this year, 31 inmates have died at Donaldson, surpassing the 2021 tally of 26 for the entire year.
According to the Alabama Department of Corrections, deaths at Donaldson have trended upward in recent years. ADOC said 17 inmates died in 2019, and 22 in 2020.
The agency has declined all requests for interviews about the increase in deaths.
