Second half implosion leads to UAB loss at Tulane, 85-60

Any momentum that UAB may have built following their victory over FAU this past week may have been put to a halt in the big easy.

After leading by one at halftime, UAB falls apart in the second half as Tulane puts up 48 second half points on their way to an 85-68 win over UAB on Sunday.

With that loss, the Blazers wrap up the regular season with a 20-11 overall record and with a 13-5 in the American Athletic Conference.

Today’s game held no weight in terms of seeding for the upcoming AAC Tournament in Fort Worth. The Blazers are officially 3rd seed meaning their next contest will be a quarterfinal game on Friday, March 14 at 8 p.m.

UAB entered halftime leading Tulane 38-37 after trailing 13-3 in the first five minutes of the game. They never seemed to re-capture that energy in the second half, struggling to defend all three levels on defense and only having one Blazer score more than three points in the final 20 minutes.

Blazer guard Ja’Borri McGhee stayed hot, scoring 25 points in the game, 19 of which were in the second half. He’s been the most productive UAB player on offense for the last three games, averaging 24.6 points in that span.

Yaxel Lendeborg finished the game with 13 points, but six of those came on free throws as he went 3-of-5 from the floor. His five attempted shots are a season low. Christian Coleman ended the game 3-of-11 from the floor with six points.

On the side, Tulane’s starting backcourt duo of Kam Williams and Asher Woods was unstoppable. Williams set a new career-high with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting and hit six of his eight three-point attempts. Woods shot 8-of-10 from the floor and hit three of his four attempts from deep, scoring 20 points and dishing out five assists. The duo shot a combined 77.2 percent on the day.

Every player in the Green Wave’s starting lineup finished in double figures. The AAC tournament tips off at noon on Wednesday as the number 12 and 13 seeds face off.
