Second 76ers’ pick from Auburn adds to Alabama colleges’ NBA Draft list

Of the 34 players who have been picked from Auburn in the NBA Draft, two have gone to the Philadelphia 76ers.

In 1984, the Sixers chose Charles Barkley, and he spent the first eight NBA seasons of his Hall of Fame career with Philadelphia.

On Thursday night, the 76ers added another player from Auburn by taking Johni Broome with the 35th selection in the NBA Draft.

Broome became the 145th player selected from an Alabama college and was the only one in the 2025 draft. The 2024 NBA Draft did not include any players from Alabama colleges.

Alabama’s Carl Shaeffer was the first college player picked from a state college, going to the Providence Steamrollers in 1949. However, Shaeffer spent his NBA career with the Indianapolis Olympians after the Steamrollers folded and played his home games about 75 miles from where he grew up.

The players drafted from the state’s colleges include (with the overall position picked in the draft in parentheses):
