SEC’s Hall of Fame backlog continues to increase

SEC’s Hall of Fame backlog continues to increase

They’ve been piling up since 1934, and now there are 453 of them — SEC players who have met the first eligibility standard for the College Football Hall of Fame but haven’t been enshrined.

The National Football Foundation released the ballot for the College Football Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024 on Monday. The ballot included 12 former SEC stars. There are 206 other standouts from the conference who were eligible for inclusion.

To be considered for the College Football Hall of Fame today, a player must have been a first-team All-American selection by one of the organizations that the NCAA uses to compile its annual consensus All-American team. Currently, those organizations are the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation. But the selectors used by the NCAA have varied over the years, ranging from a low of two to a high of 10.

That accounts for the 453 former SEC players who are potential College Football Hall of Famers. After Tennessee safety Eric Berry and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow were chosen for the Class of 2023, 102 former SEC players are in the College Football Hall of Fame.

Players aren’t considered for the College Football Hall of Fame until 10 seasons have passed since they played. They also aren’t considered while they are active NFL players. The SEC has 112 players who meet the All-American standard but aren’t eligible yet because their final season came in 2013 or later and/or they’re still playing in the NFL.

Players also aren’t considered if their college careers ended more than 50 years ago, so any player who finished playing before 1974 isn’t eligible for the 2023 ballot. The SEC has 123 non-Hall of Fame players who meet the All-American standard but are outside the 50-year window.

Those players still can be considered for the College Football Hall of Fame, but their qualifications are examined by the Football Bowl Subdivision Honors Review Committee, bypassing the ballot.

Among the 218 former SEC players eligible for the 2024 ballot are eight who were consensus All-Americans in more than one season. Seventeen SEC players who accomplished that feat already have been enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The eight who could have appeared on the Class of 2024 ballot are Alabama defensive end Leroy Cook (consensus in 1974, unanimous in 1975), Tennessee wide receiver Larry Seivers (consensus in 1975 and 1976), Tennessee defensive lineman John Henderson (consensus in 2000 and 2001), Arkansas offensive tackle Shawn Andrews (consensus in 2002 and unanimous in 2003), Alabama defensive tackle Terrence Cody (consensus in 2008 and 2009), Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes (unanimous in 2008 and consensus in 2009), Alabama offensive lineman Barrett Jones (unanimous in 2011 and consensus in 2012) and Georgia linebacker Jarvis Jones (consensus in 2011 and unanimous in 2012).

The only one who made the ballot for the Class of 2024 was Seivers.

A unanimous All-American is a player who was a first-team selection for all the organizations used by the NCAA to compile the consensus All-American team for that season.

A consensus All-American usually is a player who was a first-team selection for at least half of the organizations used by the NCAA to compile the consensus All-American team. It’s possible to become a consensus All-American without reaching the halfway mark, and it’s also possible, though unusual, not to be a consensus All-American even while making at least half of the first teams.

For consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame, players don’t have to be consensus All-Americans – just first-teamers for an NCAA consensus selector.

ALABAMA PLAYERS ELIGIBLE FOR THE COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME

Here’s a list of the SEC players who have been first-team All-Americans for NCAA consensus selectors, presented by year of selection and with the players designated as unanimous, consensus or non-consensus selections. Non-consensus means a player was a first-team All-American for at least one of the NCAA consensus selectors for that season, but he didn’t get enough first-team support to earn consensus recognition. The players already enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame are listed in bold.

Players on the College Football Hall of Fame ballot are nominated by athletic directors, head coaches and sports-information directors at National Football Foundation-member schools.

The FBS nominees are sorted geographically for eight District Screening Committees. The committee members vote on which players will represent their region on the ballot. Players who received significant support in the final voting in the previous year but did not make the College Football Hall of Fame also are held over on the ballot automatically.

The more than 12,000 members of the National Football Foundation then get the annual ballot for their consideration.

After the vote, the NFF Honors Court considers recommendations from the veterans committee, reviews the voting and chooses the members of the Hall of Fame class.
