SEC top 10 from Week 13: 3-interception games rare for Alabama QBs

While Georgia played in one of the SEC’s four non-conference contests on Saturday, Florida and Oklahoma did the Bulldogs a favor by taking Ole Miss and Alabama, respectively, out of contention for the league’s championship game, clearing the way for the Bulldogs to land a spot in the contest on Dec. 7 in Atlanta. The other championship contender will be decided by Week 14’s Texas-Texas A&M game despite the Aggies’ four-overtime loss to Auburn in Week 13. The SEC improved its mark against outside opponents to 54-8 in 2024 with Saturday’s four victories. Here are 10 stats from SEC Football by the Numbers about Week 13’s games:

2 Interceptions for Florida S Bryce Thornton in the final 92 seconds of a 24-17 victory over Ole Miss on Saturday. Thornton picked off a pass by Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart in the end zone with 1:32 to play, then got another interception at the Florida 22-yard line with 17 seconds to play. Dart had been intercepted four times in the Rebels’ first 10 games this season and hadn’t had a multiple-interception game since being picked off three times in a 41-25 loss to Texas Tech on Dec. 28, 2022, in the Texas Bowl. Thornton’s interceptions allowed Florida to post back-to-back victories as an unranked team against opponents ranked in The Associated Press Poll for the first time since 2003. The unranked Gators defeated No. 6 LSU 19-7 on Oct. 11 and No. 11 Arkansas 33-28 on Oct. 18 that season. Before downing No. 9 Ole Miss on Saturday, Florida defeated No. 21 LSU 27-16 on Nov. 16.

2 SEC players reached 1,000 receiving yards for the 2024 season on Saturday. After missing the previous three games, Ole Miss WR Tre Harris returned with a 43-yard TD reception in a 24-17 loss to Florida to boost his 2024 totals to 60 receptions for 1,030 yards and seven TDs. Arkansas WR Andrew Armstrong had eight receptions for 81 yards in a 35-14 victory over Louisiana Tech to reach 69 receptions for 1,012 yards and one TD in 2024. Armstrong and Harris are the first two SEC players to reach 1,000 receiving yards this season. Harris is the sixth Ole Miss player to reach 1,000 receiving yards in one season. A.J. Brown recorded the top two receiving seasons in Ole Miss history with 1,320 yards in 2018 and 1,252 yards in 2017. Elijah Moore had 1,193 receiving yards in 2020, Laquon Treadwell 1,153 in 2015, Shay Hodge in 1,135 in 2009 and Dontario Drummond 1,028 in 2021 for the Rebels. Armstrong is the fifth Arkansas player to reach 1,000 receiving yards in one season. The Razorbacks’ other 1,000-yard receivers have been Anthony Lucas with 1,004 in 1998, Jarius Wright with 1,117 in 2011, Cobi Hamilton with 1,335 in 2012 and Treylon Burks with 1,104 in 2021.

3 Points for Alabama in its 21-point loss to Oklahoma on Saturday, ending the longest streak for scoring in double figures in major-college football history. The Crimson Tide had scored at least 10 points in 182 consecutive games since a 9-6 overtime loss to LSU on Nov. 5, 2011. The Sooners limited the Alabama offense to 234 yards on Saturday, the Tide’s lowest output since 234 yards in a 14-13 victory over Arkansas on Oct. 11, 2014.

3:46 Was Mississippi State’s time of possession in the second half of the Bulldogs’ 39-20 loss to Missouri on Saturday. MSU had three second-half possessions. It took Mississippi State two plays to score on its opening series of the third quarter before Missouri stopped the Bulldogs on downs at the end of five- and four-play series. The Tigers’ four second-half possessions featured 15, nine, 14 and eight plays.

8 Auburn games have featured two Tigers with at least 100 receiving yards, including the past two. For the first time in the program’s history, Auburn has posted back-to-back games with two 100-yard receivers. In Saturday’s 43-41 four-overtime victory over Texas A&M, WR Cam Coleman had seven receptions for 128 yards and two TDs and WR KeAndre Lambert-Smith had two receptions for 104 yards. On Nov. 16 in a 48-14 victory over ULM, Lambert-Smith had six receptions for 104 yards and one TD and Coleman had eight receptions for 100 yards and three TDs. Auburn had not had a single receiver post consecutive 100-yard receiving games since Sammie Coates did so in three consecutive games in 2013 – 104 against Texas A&M on Oct. 19, 113 against Florida Atlantic on Oct. 26 and 102 against Arkansas on Nov. 2. Coleman is the first Auburn freshman with consecutive 100-yard receiving games since 1999, when Ronney Daniels had 143 against Central Florida on Nov. 6 and 249 against Georgia on Nov. 13.

18 Years since an Alabama player had been intercepted three times in a game without also throwing at least two TD passes. Oklahoma intercepted Jalen Milroe three times in a 24-3 victory on Saturday as the Crimson Tide QB completed 11-of-26 passes for 164 yards with no touchdowns. On Sept. 30, 2006, John Parker Wilson did not throw a TD pass but was intercepted three times in Alabama’s 28-13 loss to Florida. Between Wilson and Milroe’s games, the Tide had two others when the quarterback was intercepted three times. Blake Sims threw for 312 yards with four TDs and three interceptions in a 55-44 victory over Auburn on Nov. 29, 2014, and 237 yards with two TDs and three interceptions in a 42-35 loss to Ohio State on Jan. 1, 2015. Before its three interceptions versus Alabama, Oklahoma had gone four games without picking off a pass.

21 Rushing yards for Kentucky in its 31-14 loss to Texas on Saturday, the fewest for the Wildcats in one game in 23 years. On Dec. 1, 2001, Kentucky had 16 rushing yards in a 26-15 loss to Indiana. The Wildcats’ most recent SEC game with 21 or fewer rushing yards came on Nov. 3, 2001, when Mississippi State held Kentucky to 2 rushing yards in a 17-14 victory. Texas depressed Kentucky’s rushing total with six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. The Longhorns held their opponent to 21 or fewer rushing yards for the third time in the past 19 games. Houston had 14 rushing yards in a 31-24 loss to Texas on Oct. 21, 2023, and Iowa State had 9 in a 26-16 loss to the Longhorns on Nov. 18. On the other side on Saturday, Texas recorded a season-high 250 rushing yards against Kentucky.

22 Rushing TDs for Tennessee RB Dylan Sampson after he scored on a 14-yard run for the first points in Tennessee’s 56-0 victory over UTEP on Saturday. Sampson broke the Volunteers’ single-season TD record of 21 that Gene McEver had held since the 1929 campaign. With 132 points, Sampson also broke McEver’s school single-season scoring record of 130 set in 1929. Sampson’s 2024 output is tied for the fifth-most rushing TDs in one season in SEC history. Alabama RB Derrick Henry set the conference record with 28 rushing TDs in 2015.

23 Yards were gained on a fourth-and-3 carry by Auburn QB Payton Thorne with 1:41 to remaining in the fourth quarter of a 43-41 four-overtime victory against Texas A&M on Saturday. Thorne’s run was part of a 15-play, 74-yard series that started with 2:33 left in the fourth quarter and ended on a 29-yard field goal by Ian Vachon with five seconds left in the period to send the game into overtime. Auburn’s 19th overtime game is tied for the longest (by periods) in school history, with a 56-49 victory over Georgia on Nov. 16, 1996, a 54-46 loss to Arkansas on Oct. 24, 2015, and a 24-22 loss to Alabama on Nov. 27, 2021. The Tigers’ victory broke Texas A&M’s seven-game winning streak in overtime contests. It was the Aggies’ first setback in overtime since a 53-51 four-overtime loss to Kansas State on Nov. 12, 2011. Texas A&M has a 14-7 overtime record. Auburn is 10-9 in overtime games.

464 Yards were gained by the Texas A&M offense in Saturday’s 43-41 four-overtime loss to Auburn. The game was the fifth this century in which Auburn’s opponent gained exactly 464 yards, and the Tigers won all of them – also defeating Washington State 31-24 on Aug. 31, 2013, Ole Miss 30-22 on Oct. 5, 2013; Tennessee 30-17 on Nov. 21, 2020, and Ole Miss 31-20 on Oct. 10, 2021. Auburn has lost 14 of the past 15 games in which its opponent gained at least 465 yards.
