SEC to stay with 8-game football schedule in 2025

The SEC will stick with an 8-game conference football schedule for 2025, the league office announced Wednesday.

The SEC’s 2025 schedule will mirror its 2024 schedule, which was released in December and also includes just eight conference games. That is, schools will play the same opponents next year, just at the opposite sites as this year.

Here’s the full list:

There has been much discussion about expanding the conference schedule to nine games with Texas and Oklahoma set to join the SEC and create a 16-team league this fall, with commissioner Greg Sankey apparently in support of a 9-game schedule but some coaches and athletics directors opposed. The SEC and ACC are the only power conferences that play only eight conference games; the Big Ten and Big 12 both play nine (as did the Pac-12 before its implosion at the end of the 2023 season).

“We continue to monitor changes across college sports as they relate to future scheduling,” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said. “Continuing with our current format for the 2025 season provides additional time to understand the impact of the changes happening around us as we determine the appropriate long-term plan for SEC football scheduling.”

According to a report by 247 Sports, the SEC might stagger kickoff times beginning in 2024, with different start times on the SEC Network and ESPN/ABC. For example, the SEC Network could feature kickoff times of 11:45 a.m. Central, 3:15 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., with ESPN/ABC airing games at 11 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m.
