SEC Legends for 2024 include Barrett Jones, Marcus McNeill and … who???
The SEC has unveiled its football “Legends” class for 2024, which includes a few slam dunk selections and at least two head-scratchers.
Alabama and Auburn’s “legends” are both former All-America offensive linemen — Barrett Jones for the Crimson Tide and Marcus McNeill for the Tigers. Also selected were ex-Florida quarterback Rex Grossman, former Ole Miss running back Dexter McCluster and ex-Tennessee safety Eric Berry.
But the real headliners on the list are two college football legends who never came close to playing in the SEC. Though they are in their first year in the conference, Oklahoma and Texas also selected “SEC Legends” for 2024.
For Texas, it’s quarterback Vince Young, who led the Longhorns to the national championship in 2005. Young not only never played in the SEC, but his only experience with teams in the conference consisted of two games vs. Arkansas in 2003 and 2004.
Oklahoma’s choice is coach Barry Switzer, who led the Sooners to 157 victories from 1973-88 and national championships in 1974, 1975 and 1985. Switzer played at Arkansas, but even that was before the Razorbacks joined the SEC.
Incidentally, the SEC Legends for South Carolina (defensive end Corey Miller) and Missouri (quarterback Chase Daniel) also never played in the SEC. Texas A&M’s Legend (offensive lineman Luke Joeckel) played in the league for only one of his three college seasons.

The selections of Jones and McNeill are pretty unassailable, however. Jones was a two-time All-American and four-time Academic All-American at Alabama, and has the distinction of starting three national championship victories at three different positions — right guard in 2009, left tackle in 2011 and center in 2012.
McNeill was a two-time All-America offensive tackle during his time at Auburn (2002-05). He won the SEC’s Jacobs Blocking Trophy as a senior in 2005 and was part of the Tigers’ undefeated SEC championship team as a junior.
