SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 for Week 2

The second Saturday of the SEC’s 91st season features 14 non-conference contests. Here are 10 numbers, along with the schedule, TV and betting lines, to get ready for Week 2:

2 Consecutive seasons have started for Vanderbilt WR Will Sheppard with a pair of two-TD games. In 2022, Sheppard had two TD receptions against Hawaii and Elon. In 2023, Sheppard had two TD receptions against Hawaii and Alabama A&M. Sheppard added another TD reception in Vanderbilt’s third game last season – a 45-25 loss to Wake Forest. The Commodores play the Demon Deacon again this season in their third game.

3 Previous games have been played by Auburn in California. The Tigers lost 12-0 to Santa Clara on Oct. 30, 1936, in San Francisco, 24-17 to Southern Cal on Sept. 2, 2002, in Los Angeles, and 34-31 to Florida State on Jan. 6, 2014, in Pasadena in the BCS national-championship game. Auburn plays California in Berkeley on Saturday night.

5 Receptions are needed by Mississippi State RB Jo’quavious Marks to become the school’s career leader. Current record-holder Fred Ross had 199 receptions for 2,528 yards and 22 TDs for the Bulldogs from 2013 through 2016.

8 Victories and one loss for Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher against Miami (Fla.). Fisher had a 7-1 record against the Hurricanes while he was the coach at Florida State from 2010 through 2017 and scored a 17-9 victory over Miami with the Aggies last season. Miami has lost its past five meetings with SEC opponents since a 21-16 victory over Florida on Sept. 7, 2013. Texas A&M visits Miami on Saturday.

24 Consecutive non-conference road games have been lost by Kent State, with six of the setbacks coming against SEC opponents. The Golden Flashes visit Arkansas on Saturday. Kent State lost at LSU 45-13 in 2013, Alabama 48-0 in 2016, Ole Miss 38-17 in 2018, Auburn 55-16 in 2019, Texas A&M 41-10 in 2021 and Georgia 39-22 in 2022 as part of the streak. Kent State’s most recent non-conference road win is a 35-23 victory at Rutgers on Oct. 27, 2012.

SEC FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS: TOP 10 FROM WEEK 1

28 Consecutive regular-season games have been won by Georgia, the third-longest streak in SEC history. The Bulldogs haven’t lost in the regular season since 44-28 setback against Florida on Nov. 7, 2020. The longest regular-season winning streak in SEC history lasted 33 games, which Tennessee achieved between a 13-7 loss to Vanderbilt on Nov. 13, 1937, and a 19-0 loss to Duke on Oct. 4, 1941. The only other regular-season winning streak in the SEC that stretched longer than Georgia’s current one reached 29 games, achieved by Alabama between a 17-10 loss to Auburn on Nov. 24, 2007, and a 35-21 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 9, 2010. Georgia would tie Alabama’s streak by beating Ball State on Saturday.

33 Consecutive home-openers have been won by Florida, with the Gators kicking off their 2023 home schedule on Saturday against McNeese State. Florida’s most recent loss in its home-opener is a 24-19 defeat by Ole Miss on Sept. 9, 1989. The teams that Florida has beaten in the streak have been Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Charleston Southern (twice), The Citadel, Eastern Michigan (twice), Florida Atlantic (twice), Hawaii, Houston, Kentucky, Louisiana-Lafayette, Marshall, Massachusetts, Miami (Ohio), New Mexico State (twice), Oklahoma State, San Jose State (twice), South Carolina, Southern Miss (twice), Tennessee, Toledo, UAB, Utah, UT Martin, Western Kentucky, Western Michigan and Wyoming.

57 Consecutive non-conference regular-season games have been won by Alabama — the longest streak in the nation during the SEC era. The Crimson Tide’s most recent loss in a non-conference regular-season game came on Nov. 17, 2007, when Alabama fell to Louisiana-Monroe 21-14. Since that loss, the Tide has run off 43 victories against non-conference opponents in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Alabama has the nation’s longest such active streak, with Oregon next at 31 in a row. Alabama’s home winning streak against non-conference opponents is the third-longest in SEC history. LSU won 49 in a row between a 13-10 loss to UAB on Sept. 23, 2000, and a 24-21 loss to Troy on Sept. 30, 2017, and Tennessee won 44 in a row between a 14-6 loss to Chattanooga on Nov. 8, 1958, and a 17-17 tie with UCLA on Sept. 7, 1974. Alabama will try to extend its streaks when Texas visits Tuscaloosa on Saturday.

60 Years since Furman defeated an SEC opponent, with the Paladins set to play South Carolina on Saturday. Since a 14-13 victory over Vanderbilt on Sept. 21, 1963, Furman has gone 0-8 versus SEC opponents, including losses to the Gamecocks in 2010 and 2014. Saturday’s game will be the 50th between South Carolina and Furman, although only the third since 1982, when the Paladins posted a 28-23 victory over the Gamecocks. South Carolina leads the series 28-20-1.

67 Years since the previous time that Ole Miss and Tulane squared off as ranked teams, with the No. 20 Rebels and No. 24 Green Wave set to square off on Saturday. On Oct. 16, 1956, No. 19 Tulane upended No. 6 Ole Miss 10-3 in an SEC game in New Orleans. The teams have met 35 times since that contest, and while Ole Miss has been ranked for 10 of them, Tulane wasn’t ranked for any of them. The Rebels have won 12 in a row in the series, with the Green Wave’s most recent victory coming by a 14-9 score on Nov. 5, 1988, in Oxford. The winning streak has pushed Ole Miss’ lead in the series to 44-28.
