SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 for Week 12

SEC Football by the Numbers: Top 10 for Week 12

The 12th Saturday of the SEC’s 91st season features three conference contests and seven non-conference games. Here are 10 numbers, along with the schedule, TV and betting lines, to get ready for Week 12:

4 Consecutive Auburn games have included an increase in points for the Tigers, the second time that has happened in a single season in school history. Since losing to LSU 48-18 on Oct. 14, Auburn has lost to Ole Miss 28-21 and beaten Mississippi State 27-13, Vanderbilt 31-15 and Arkansas 48-10 on successive Saturdays. The other occurrence of four games with increasing points occurred in 1942. After losing to Mississippi State 6-0 on Oct. 31, 1942, Auburn lost to Georgia Pre-Flight 41-14 and defeated LSU 25-7, Georgia 27-13 and Clemson 41-13 on four November Saturdays. Auburn has never had five consecutive games with increasing points in one season. The Tigers’ climbing point totals have been accompanied by an increase in rushing yards. Auburn had 139 rushing yards against LSU, then had 153 against Ole Miss, 186 against Mississippi State, 230 against Vanderbilt and 354 against Arkansas. Auburn plays New Mexico State on Saturday.

4 Previous SEC programs have gone undefeated and untied in conference play in three consecutive seasons, which Georgia would accomplish by winning on Saturday — Tennessee from 1938 through 1940, Alabama from 1973 through 1975 and 1977 through 1979 and Georgia from 1980 through 1981. Tennessee and Georgia went 18-0 while Alabama had 20 victories in its first streak and 19 in its second. Georgia has had an 8-0 league record in each of the past two seasons and is 7-0 in 2023.

4 Consecutive Florida games have included at least 30 points for the Gators’ opponent, tied for the longest such streak in school history. In its past four games, Florida defeated South Carolina 41-39 on Oct. 14 and lost to Georgia 43-20 on Oct. 28, Arkansas 39-36 on Nov. 4 and LSU 52-35 on Nov. 11. In 2021, Florida lost to LSU 49-42, Georgia 34-7 and South Carolina 40-17 before beating Samford 70-52 in consecutive games. Florida is the fourth SEC team with a streak of at least four games in which its opponents have scored 39 or more points. Vanderbilt in 1990 and Auburn in 2022 had four consecutive games in which they yielded at least 39 points. The only longer such streak lasted five games by Arkansas in 2019, when the Razorbacks lost to Auburn 51-10, Alabama 48-7, Mississippi State 54-24, Western Kentucky 45-19 and LSU 56-20 in consecutive games.

4 Consecutive LSU games have included a touchdown for the Tigers on their first possession of the game and the second half. Seven of the eight TD drives covered at least 72 yards. The exception was a 39-yard scoring series on LSU’s first second-half possession against Auburn. During the streak, LSU defeated Auburn 48-14 on Oct. 14, Army 62-0 on Oct. 21 and Florida 52-35 on Nov. 11 and lost to Alabama 42-28 on Nov. 4. The Tigers’ nine-play, 75-yard TD drive to open the second half against the Crimson Tide had given LSU a 28-21 lead.

14 Years since Kentucky won three SEC road games in the same season. The Wildcats come to South Carolina on Saturday with road wins against Vanderbilt and Mississippi State in 2023. In 2009, Kentucky won on the road against conference rivals Auburn, Vanderbilt and Georgia. Since the 2009 season, the Wildcats are 14-51 on the road in the SEC, but they have won three of the past four.

15 Consecutive victories for Alabama in the game before it plays Auburn. The Crimson Tide plays Chattanooga on Saturday before taking on Auburn next week. Alabama’s 21-14 setback against Louisiana-Monroe on Nov. 17, 2007, was its most recent loss in the game before the Iron Bowl. That was the final defeat in a five-year losing streak for Alabama in the game preceding the Iron Bowl. The other four losses came against LSU. The Tide played Mississippi State in 2008, Kentucky in 2020 and Arkansas in 2021 in the game before facing Auburn. In the other games in the winning streak, Alabama defeated non-conference opponents — Chattanooga and Western Carolina three times apiece and Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Charleston Southern, Mercer, the Citadel and Austin Peay once each.

15 Consecutive seasons with at least 10 victories for Alabama, the major-college record for consecutive seasons with double-digit victories. The Crimson Tide could extend its streak with a win on Saturday. In 2022, Alabama broke the record for consecutive 10-win seasons that Florida State established from 1987 through 2000. Alabama most recently failed to win 10 games in a season in 2007, when the Tide went 7-6. Alabama won 12 games in 2008, 14 in 2009, 10 in 2010, 12 in 2011, 13 in 2012, 11 in 2013, 12 in 2014, 14 in 2015, 14 in 2016, 13 in 2017, 14 in 2018, 11 in 2019, 13 in 2020, 13 in 2021 and 11 in 2022.

27 Consecutive victories for Georgia, the longest winning streak in program history. Georgia’s most recent loss was a 41-24 setback against Alabama in the SEC Championship Game on Dec. 4, 2021. The Bulldogs have the third-longest winning streak in SEC history – one victory short of the league-record 28 in a row accomplished by Alabama during the 1978, 1979 and 1980 seasons and equaled by the Crimson Tide during the 1991, 1992 and 1993 seasons. A week after a 24-14 loss to Southern Cal, Alabama’s first 28-game winning streak started with a 51-28 victory over Vanderbilt on Sept. 30, 1978. It ended with a 6-3 loss to Mississippi State on Nov. 1, 1980. A week after a 35-0 loss to Florida, Alabama’s second 28-game winning streak started with a 10-0 victory over Georgia on Sept. 21, 1991. It ended with a 17-17 tie against Tennessee on Oct. 16, 1993. The Crimson Tide won its next two games after tying the Volunteers before a 17-13 loss to LSU. That streak of 31 games without a loss is tied for the longest in SEC history. Georgia Tech had two ties during a 31-game undefeated streak between a 54-19 loss to Alabama on Nov. 18, 1950, and a 27-14 loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 24, 1953. Georgia Tech’s ties came against Duke in the ninth game and Florida in the 28th game of the streak.

65 Years since Chattanooga beat an SEC team. The Mocs, who play Alabama on Saturday, upended Tennessee 14-6 in 1958 but have lost their past 56 games against SEC opponents to drop their record against the conference to 3-92. Chattanooga’s other two victories over SEC opponents came in the same month in the 1945 season, when it beat Vanderbilt 13-6 on Nov. 10 and Ole Miss 31-6 on Nov. 29. Since the formation of the SEC in 1933, Chattanooga has played 13 opponents while they were league members, including former members Georgia Tech and Tulane. The Mocs have not played Florida, Missouri or Texas A&M.

799 Victories in Auburn football history. A win on Saturday against New Mexico State would make the Tigers the 13th NCAA FBS and fifth SEC program with 800 victories. The other schools with at least 800 victories include Michigan, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Texas, Oklahoma, Penn State, Nebraska, Tennessee, Southern Cal, Georgia and LSU. The NCAA record book credits Auburn with an all-time record of 799-468-47.
