SEC Bracket Watch 2025: Where Alabama, Auburn hoops sit following a wild Saturday

While the hype train has left the station for Alabama and Auburn’s showdown at Coleman Coliseum, one top contender hit a speed bump on Saturday afternoon.

No. 1 Auburn basketball’s 90-81 loss to No. 6 Florida at Neville Arena, followed up by No. 2 Duke falling to Clemson just a few hours later produced the “right on time” chaos college basketball provides. As of this reading, it is presumed that Alabama basketball will be the new No. 1 team in the country when the new polls come out late Monday morning.

But what does it mean for the latest Top 16 seeding projections?

Spoiler Alert: Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

The Auburn and Duke upsets, while a dent in the overall record, don’t actually do much damage to the overall resumes. Both schools rank in the top five in important metrics such as strength of record, wins above bubble, and the NET ranking.

But if the second weekend in February is any indication, we are just getting started with some early madness. However, there are a few questions when it comes to the No. 1 seed line.

Can Alabama basketball grab the No. 1 overall seed?

By next Sunday morning, we may very well be having a conversation about Alabama basketball passing Auburn when it comes to a No. 1 overall seed. While Auburn’s metrics are better than a Duke team that has a head-to-head edge on them, an underperforming ACC remains their albatross.

Alabama does not play in the ACC and will have a head-to-head victory over Auburn, who has played a much more difficult schedule. Even if Auburn were to stumble at Vanderbilt before the Iron Bowl of Basketball, an Alabama over Auburn victory still carries weight. It also opens the door further to other schools grabbing a potential No. 1 seed.

Who else is in the No. 1 seed conversation?

While the top seed line didn’t have a complete overhaul from Saturday’s craziness, we do have a new entrant in the discussion. As soon as the clock hit 0.0 inside Neville Arena, the Florida Gators put a stamp on their case for being a No. 1 seed.

While firmly sitting on the No. 2 seed line, the Gators win on the road at Auburn enhances a resume that doesn’t have any glaring blemishes. Florida is in the top 10 in all the important categories for the tournament selection committee to consider.

  • 5th in NET.
  • 5th in Strength of Record.
  • 7th in Wins Above Bubble.
  • 5th in Kenpom.

According to Bart Torvik, Florida is projected to win seven of their final eight games. The one projected loss? March 5, vs. Alabama.
