SEC basketball coach reportedly set to be fired, hours after NCAA tournament loss

Rodney Terry is reportedly out as basketball coach at Texas, hours after his team lost in the First Four of the 2025 NCAA tournament.

Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68 and Chip Brown of 247 Sports both reported late Wednesday that Texas was set to move on from Terry, with official word expected some time Thursday.

Terry went 62-37 with three NCAA tournament berths in three seasons with the Longhorns, including a Big 12 tournament title and Elite Eight run in 2023. However, the Longhorns slipped to 19-16 in their first season in the SEC, and blew a double-digit lead in an 86-80 loss to Xavier on Wednesday night in Dayton, Ohio.

Terry, who was also an assistant at Texas from 2002-11 before rejoining the staff in 2021, was asked about his job status following Wednesday’s loss.

“I’ve been at Texas 13 years, and there’s not a year I haven’t made the NCAA Tournament or been a part of the NCAA Tournament,” Terry said. “I have a lot of — I have a lot of pride in terms of being a Longhorn. I love being at Texas. I don’t think anyone has been a part of Texas basketball that’s been more successful than myself. I’ve been a part of the top five seasons in this program’s history of this program. Our guys — I give our guys a lot of credit for putting themselves in a great position to be here tonight.

“At the end of the day, it’s in God’s hands. At the end of the day, I live my life, I’m a believer, and if God has plans for me to be here, then I’ll be here. If He has plans for me to be somewhere else, He’s the one with the master plan at all times. That’s what I live my life by. I don’t live my life by no man. I live my life by God. I got strong faith.”

A former head coach at Fresno State and UTEP, Terry took over a Texas program mired in controversy after the firing of Chris Beard following an arrest in December 2022. The Longhorns ended that season 22-8, and Terry was named Sporting News national coach of the year.

Beard was hired a short time later at Ole Miss, and is 42-23 in two seasons. The Rebels are currently 22-11 and made the NCAA tournament as a No. 6 seed, set to meet North Carolina in first-round game on Friday.
