Seattle Seahawks GM on former Alabama QB: A lot of wows and whoas
Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider served as a scout for the Green Bay Packers from 1993 through 1996, joining the NFL team shortly after quarterback Brett Favre, who took his first snap in Titletown USA in 1992.
During an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” on Thursday, Schneider referenced Favre, an 11-time Pro Bowler and three-time NFL MVP, when talking about former Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.
Milroe joined the Seahawks in the third round of the NFL Draft on April 25.

“I was lucky to be around Brett Favre at a very young age,” Schneider said, “and there was a lot of ‘Wow’ and there was a lot of ‘Whoa’ to throws. And so (Milroe)’s got some of those wows and those whoas. But also when he takes off, he’s scoring from 50, 60, 70 yards and running 22 miles per hour with the ball in his hands, too. He’s a special young man. He’s been great so far.”
Seattle did not draft Milroe to be their starting quarterback in 2025.
After trading quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders, the Seahawks signed Sam Darnold to a three-year, $100.5 million contract in March. Darnold earned a Pro Bowl invitation last season, when he paced the Vikings to a 14-3 regular-season record and threw for 4,319 yards and 35 touchdowns.
Schneider said his expectation level for Darnold was “very high,” and he also was glad to have quarterback Drew Lock, “a great personality and person to get back.”
The Seahawks added Lock in free agency after he started five games for the New York Giants in 2024. He started two games for Seattle in 2023.
Schneider said the Seahawks alerted their sitting quarterbacks before picking Milroe.
“Coach Mike Macdonald gave Sam a heads up,” Schneider said. “It was kind of in that period just coming down the pike, like, ‘Hey, this isn’t about you. This is about acquiring an impact player, in our opinion.’ Where’s the quarterback stuff go? We don’t know how fast. So Mike talked to Sam. I was able to communicate with Drew. And, obviously, we were communicating with Sam Howell all throughout the weekend as well.”
The day after drafting Milroe, Seattle traded Howell, a 17-game starter for the Washington Commanders in 2023, to the Vikings.
In addition to throwing for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns for Alabama in 2024, Milroe ran for 726 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Schneider described Milroe as having “a high ceiling,” but didn’t elaborate on the Seahawks’ plans for the rookie, other than saying the offensive staff can “do some unique things with him.”
