The Los Angeles Chargers waived safety AJ Finley just hours before the NFL team took the field on Monday night and lost to the Baltimore Ravens 30-23.

But Finley will be eligible to play for the Seattle Seahawks when they take on the New York Jets on Sunday.

On Tuesday, the NFL awarded Finley to the Seahawks after Seattle claimed the former St. Paul’s Episcopal standout off waivers. The Seahawks held the 20th pick in the waiver-wire order.

To create a spot on its 53-man active roster for Finley, Seattle waived defensive end Myles Adams.

The Chargers waived Finley after he’d played in all 10 Los Angeles games this season, getting on the field for 43 defensive snaps and 170 special-teams plays. The Chargers parted ways with Finley to clear a roster spot for defensive back Deane Leonard, who came off injured reserve on Monday.

Finley helped St. Paul’s Episcopal win the AHSAA Class 5A championships in 2015 and 2017. As a junior, Finley ran for 994 yards, and as a senior, he had four interceptions for the Mobile school before heading to Ole Miss.

Finley entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie, but he played in 12 games for the Chargers in 2023.

By getting Finley off waivers, the Seahawks also assume his contract. He’s in the second season of a two-year, $1.765 million contract.
