Search continues for man who possibly drowned in Tennessee River
Rescue workers are on the second day of their search for a man who is believed to have drowned Saturday afternoon in the Tennessee River near McFarland Park in Florence.
“We don’t have any additional details at this time. Our dive team along with EMA (Emergency Management Agency) are continuing to search the area,” Joshua Meza, a spokesperson for the city of Florence told AL.com.
Boats from the Florence Fire Department, Police Department, Sheffield Fire Department and the Marine Police Division of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency were in the water searching for the man, who is believed to be in his 30s, according to reports from the Times Daily.
“Several state and local agencies are on scene at McFarland Park due to a possible drowning. Please avoid the area to prevent congestion. No other details are available at this time,” Florence Police Department posted to Facebook on Saturday.
Brad Holmes, Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency director, said the Saturday search, which began around 5 p.m., was suspended due to darkness at 8:50 p.m and officials would continue searching early Sunday morning, according to reports from the Times Daily.
Holmes told the Times Daily that the Florence Police and Lauderdale EMA are also using drones to locate the man.
“The person was at the park with a group at the beach area and swam out to a buoy and had turned around to return to the shoreline. He then began to struggle and went under,” Holmes told the Times Daily.
