Seann William Scott spotted as ‘Bad Man’ continues filming in Alabama

Anyone passing through Helena either spotted a traffic detour or actor Seann William Scott, or both, as his new film “Bad Man” continued filming in the Birmingham area on Monday.

The “American Pie” and “Dukes of Hazzard” star plays a disgraced cop who’s investigating a small-town murder in the movie currently in production in Alabama.

Filming was spotted last week in Adamsville and Graysville, with at least one Stifler sighting reported to AL.com.

Jessica Moody, director of programs and operations for Film Birmingham and Create Birmingham, confirmed that filming for “Bad Man” was underway here, and said it will continue for a few weeks, break for the holidays and return in January. Dates for filming listed on the Film & Television Industry Alliance website are Dec. 11, 2023, to Jan. 19, 2024.

The director for “Bad Man” is Michael Diliberti, who also wrote the screenplay with JJ Nelson, according to IMDb. It also stars Alabama native Johnny Simmons (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” “21 Jump Street”) and Rob Riggle (“Step Brothers,” “The Hangover”).

This week, the show goes on just outside the Magic City.

“We’re always excited when movies, commercials and music videos all come to Helena to shoot,” Helena Mayor Brian Puckett told AL.com on Monday. “We’ve been blessed with a lot over the years with that industry coming in here to the city. This is no exception with this crew producing the movie ‘Bad Man.’ Along with the actors and actresses, they have all been extremely nice to work with and to make sure everything goes smoothly.”

Between takes, Scott stopped to snap a photo with Puckett on set. “You never want to bother someone when they’re on the job,” Puckett said. “It’s always a good opportunity to get to know someone, especially of his caliber and craft. He was great.”

Puckett (who shared a few set pics with AL.com, which he also posted on Facebook) teased he and Helena should be seeing more of Scott and the “Bad Man” crew the next few days, noting they’d continue shooting throughout the week before taking a break for the holidays and then returning for a few more days of work.

The crew on Sunday filmed inside The Depot Deli & Grill, a popular local restaurant, after poor weather prevented them from finishing some exterior scenes. Puckett said on Monday they shot a concert scene at Helena Amphitheater near the waterfall at Buck Creek, where the city often hosts live music. “This is art mimicking reality,” the mayor said.

“Bad Man” should continue filming around some local businesses during the week, perhaps including some action scenes in the city streets at night.

Here’s the plot of “Bad Man,” as reported by The Cinemaholic:

“Set in Colt Lake, Tennessee, the film revolves around a town gripped by a menacing meth crisis, and the stakes skyrocket when a murder occurs. Deputy Sam Evans, a once-admired local sports star, finds himself thrust into the heart of the investigation, despite having fallen from grace in the eyes of his community. Struggling to be taken seriously, Evans faces an unexpected twist when hotshot Bobby Gaines, an undercover agent from the state’s Special Narcotics Task Force, swoops in as the town’s new hero.

“As the narrative progresses, tensions rise in the small Tennessee town after the unlikely duo teams up to tackle the case. Evans, determined to redeem himself, is forced to collaborate with the charismatic Gaines, who quickly becomes the talk of the town. However, beneath the surface of this seemingly perfect partnership, suspicions arise. ‘Bad Man’ promises a gripping narrative that goes beyond the surface, delving into the complexities of crime, loyalty, and the blurred lines between hero and villain.”

Hemlock Circle Productions and Petri Entertainment are behind the indie movie, according to The Cinemaholic. Producers are Warner Davis, Todd M. Friedman and Brian Levy.

Best known for playing Steven Stifler in the popular “American Pie” film franchise, Scott has appeared in movies such as “Dude, Where’s My Car?,” “Goon,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “The Rundown,” “Mr. Woodcock,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and more. He also voiced the character of Crash in the “Ice Age” animated film franchise.

Scott had a lead role in the “Lethal Weapon” TV series, 2018-2019, with his character, Wesley Cole, replacing Martin Riggs, played by Alabama native Clayne Crawford for the first two seasons of the show. Most recently, Scott appeared in Fox’s “Welcome to Flatch,” a mockumentary series about life in the small town of Flatch, Ohio.

“Bad Man” is the latest movie to film in the Birmingham area, following Matthew McConaughey’s “The Rivals of Amziah King,” which filmed in several Central Alabama locations in June and July. “Nowhere Men,” a crime thriller starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan of “The Walking Dead” and Jack Quaid of “The Boys,” also filmed in Birmingham this fall.
