Scouting report: What to know about Ole Miss ahead of matchup with Auburn

Coming off a victory at LSU, Auburn basketball wraps up a two-game road stretch in Oxford matching up against No. 23 Ole Miss.

After missing two weeks with an ankle injury suffered Jan. 11, Auburn leading scorer Johni Broome has finished his last two games with double-doubles.

Sitting at 19-1 overall and 7-0 in SEC play, Auburn is the only school in the SEC still undefeated in conference play.

Here’s a closer look at Ole Miss as they look to look stop Broome and the Tigers momentum:

The season so far

Ole Miss enters this game with a 16-5 record, dropping three straight conference games to Mississippi State, Texas A&M and Missouri.

The Rebels best victories this season comes against No.4 Alabama, Arkansas and Texas. Ole Miss sits 22nd in KenPom’s efficiency rankings.

“They’ve lost three games by a combined 12 points. Their only loss at home was to Texas A&M where they led the entire game until the very, very end,” Bruce Pearl said Thursday. “This is a matchup of two teams that take care of the ball.”

Players to watch

Ole Miss Guard Sean Pedulla leads the Rebels in scoring averaging 14.5 points per game. His 2.2 steals a game is also a team high.

The backcourt duo of Jaylen Murray and Matt Murrell both average over 10 points a game for Ole Miss. Murray leads the team averaging 3.7 assist a game.

Duke transfer forward Jaemyn Brakefield has been key to the Rebels roster depth averaging 10.8 points and 5.0 rebounds. Brakefield is shooting a team high 46.9% from the floor this season.

“When Jaemyn Brakefield is coming off the bench, that tells you how deep and how talented of a roster this Ole Miss team has,” Bruce Pearl said.

Keys to the game

Pressure the Rebels backcourt

Auburn basketball finished with 15 steals in its last game against LSU forcing 20 total turnovers on the Bayou Bengals.

Shutting down the Rebels backcourt will force Ole Miss to turn to its wing scorers in Brakefield and Malik Dia. However, with the emergence of guys like Chaney Johnson and Ja’Heim Hudson in the frontcourt; that will not be an easy adjustment for the Rebels.

“Being No. 1, that alone gets you a big target on your back. And then also being undefeated, we’re going to get everybody’s best shot,” Johnson said when previewing Ole Miss Thursday.

Tipoff for Auburn and Ole Miss is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN.
