Scott Drew turns down Kentucky, stays at Baylor, per reports

Kentucky is still searching for a basketball coach.

Scott Drew will stay at Baylor and has turned down Kentucky to replace John Calipari, both Pete Thamel and Pat Forde report.

Drew, who has a 446-244 record and a national title at Baylor, was considered the top target for the Wildcats. Since news broke of the job opening, Alabama’s Nate Oats, Jay Wright and UConn’s Dan Hurley have all made comments indicating they weren’t interested in the job.

Drew’s relationship with Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart indicated there was a chance the coach would be the next man up in Lexington.

KWTX, a local television station in Central Texas, filmed members of Drew’s family getting off a private plane with ties to a Kentucky donor that flew back from Lexington, Kentucky, on Wednesday night.

According to Thamel, “Drew deliberated on the decision to coach the Wildcats for about a day, as he had long considered Kentucky one of the few jobs he would consider leaving Baylor for.”

Sources told Thamel it was not believed Drew met with Kentucky in person.

Drew has 12 NCAA Tournament appearances, including a Final Four appearance on his resume.

Calipari was introduced as Arkansas’ basketball coach Wednesday, a day after the Hall of Fame coach stepped down from the Kentucky program he led to the 2012 NCAA championship. The 65-year-old Calipari signed a five-year contract with a base annual salary of $7 million through April 2029 with a maximum of two automatic rollover years for NCAA Tournament appearances that would extend the contract to 2031.

The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus and features retention bonuses of $500,000 each year of the contract along with one-time bonuses for making the NCAA Tournament, reaching the second round, Sweet 16, Final Four and winning a national championship.
