Scott Cochran to make West Alabama coaching debut in Birmingham

Scott Cochran will make his debut as West Alabama’s head football coach at Birmingham’s Legion Field on Aug. 30.

The Tigers will face Fort Valley State as part of the “Week Zero Labor Day Classic,” it was announced recently. Valdosta State will meet Clark Atlanta at 11:15 a.m., followed by UWA-FVSU at 3:15 p.m.

The 46-year-old Cochran took over at West Alabama in February following the ascension of head coach Brett Gilliland to athletics director. He won eight national championship rings while working under Nick Saban and LSU and Alabama and later Kirby Smart at Georgia.

Though the event has “Week Zero” in its name, it actually takes place during Week 1 of the college football season. Teams need special permission from the NCAA to play games during Week Zero on Aug. 25.

Tickets are currently on sale at weekzero.org, with one purchase price covering both games. The event also promises access to the “largest BBQ festival in Alabama.”
