Scott Cochran adds former Alabama DL to coaching staff at UWA

Scott Cochran is bringing another familiar face to Livingston. According to Football Scoop, Damion Square is heading to West Alabama, where the report states he will coach the defensive line under the former Crimson Tide strength coach.

Square spent one season on the CTSN broadcast as sideline reporter. He took that job just before the 2024 season began, after Damien Harris, who was originally announced as the sideline reporter, opted to pursue other media opportunities.

Cochran was introduced as West Alabama’s head coach on Friday. The longtime UA strength coach, who later spent time at Georgia under Kirby Smart and has won eight national championships throughout his career, is in his first head coaching job.

Square played defensive line at Alabama from 2008-2012. He won three national championships with the Crimson Tide.

After his Alabama career ended, Square spent at least parts of nine seasons in the NFL. He played the longest for the San Diego/ Los Angeles Chargers, spending six years with the organization.

West Alabama is a Division II school. The Tigers needed a new head coach after Brett Gilliland moved up to athletics director after an 11-year run in the role Cochran took over.

Square wasn’t the first ex-Alabama player Cochran pulled for his staff. Former Crimson Tide long snapper Thomas Fletcher is reportedly joining the staff as special teams coordinator.

Alabama opens its season Aug. 30 at Florida State, and CTSN will presumably have a new sideline reporter by then.
