Scott Cochran adds 2 more former Alabama stars to UWA coaching staff

Former Alabama football strength coach Scott Cochran continued to fill his West Alabama staff with familiar faces on Thursday. UWA announced former Crimson Tide running back Bo Scarbrough and defensive lineman Damien Square will join Cochran in Livingston.

Scarbrough will work as the Tigers’ director of high school relations. Square will be West Alabama’s defensive line coach.

“Both Bo and Damion have played at the highest level, bringing a wealth of knowledge and credibility to our program that will undoubtedly inspire and elevate our players,” Cochran said in a UWA news release on Thursday.

The Division II Tigers represent Cochran’s first time as a head coach. He spent a season out of coaching, going through addiction recovery and starting a non-profit to help others do so as well.

Since taking the West Alabama job, he has looked to his former Alabama players to build out the staff, bringing on the likes of Blake Sims, OJ Howard and Ronnie Clark. The jobs are the first in coaching for both Scarbrough and Square.

Scarborough officially retired from pro football in 2024 after a run with the UFL’s Birmingham Stallions. He won two national titles at Alabama.

“Bo’s experience and passion for player development will be invaluable as our new director of high School relations,” Cochran said in the press release.

Square spent nine seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2023. He worked as a sideline reporter for the Crimson Tide Sports Network last season, before leaving to enter coaching.

“Damion’s expertise and leadership on the defensive line will greatly enhance our team’s performance,” Cochran said in the release.

West Alabama will play its spring game Friday in Livingston. Admission to the event is free.
