School board member seeks Madison City Council seat

A Madison city school board member has entered the race for city council.

Alice Lessmann announced this week she is running for the District 5 seat in northeastern Madison, currently held by councilor Ranae Bartlett. Bartlett is running to replace Mayor Paul Finley, who is not seeking re-election.

“We need a collaborative approach of working closely with residents and stakeholders to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses our infrastructure needs while safeguarding our city’s financial stability,” Lessmann said in a news release. “I want to bring my blend of business experience, educational insight, and dedication to our community to help us build an even brighter future for Madison.”

Lessmann has been a member of the Madison City Schools Board of Education since 2020 and the District 9 director for the Alabama Association of School Boards since 2021.

She served 21 years in the Alabama National Guard, retiring with the rank of lieutenant colonel. She has volunteered with and supported numerous local organizations, including River of Hope Campaign, the Madison Chamber, Madison PTA and American Legion.

Lessmann is among at least four announced candidates for the seven-member council. Madison’s municipal election will be held Aug. 26.
