Scattered severe storms possible Friday in Alabama
Severe thunderstorms will be possible on Friday across parts of south Alabama ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service.
The strongest storms could have wind gusts up to 60 mph, and a tornado or two will also be possible.
NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center has a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk in place for Friday across extreme southern Alabama. Forecasters have expanded it since Wednesday to include areas in southeast Alabama.
A Level 2 risk means that scattered severe storms will be possible.
The rest of south Alabama and part of south-central Alabama (from roughly Clanton southward) will have a Level 1 severe weather risk. A Level 1 risk means that isolated severe storms will be possible.
According to the National Weather Service storms will be possible from late Friday morning into the evening hours.
After today’s chilly start winds will shift to out of the south and bring milder and moister air over the southern part of Alabama. Then a cold front will approach from the northwest on Friday, providing the energy for storms to develop and strengthen in that warmer airmass, according to forecasters.
Storms are expected to move out of Alabama later on Friday, and colder air is expected to move in for the weekend.
