Scarbinsky: DeBoerâs no Kiffin (on social media)
This is an opinion column
Kalen DeBoer hasn’t been here long enough to unpack. He’s just now replacing the revolving door on the staff meeting room, but he already has made history. He is the first Alabama head football coach with a Twitter account.
You can say X now marks the spot for the social media platform. To most of us, it’s still the bluebird of anonymous unhappiness, misinformation with a motive and genius memes and GIFs that make you LOL.
Twitter was launched in July of 2006. That was Mike Shula’s last summer in the big office in the Mal Moore Building, and as best I can tell, he was neither an early nor a late adopter. Now a senior offensive assistant with the Buffalo Bills, he does not appear to have his own account, at least under his own name.
It’s not in keeping with Shula’s character, but it’s not hard to imagine a fired coach somewhere having a burner account on his burner phone, taking pot shots at his former employer, his successor and media members who hounded him during his tenure.
Alabama had just one football coach between Shula and DeBoer. In keeping with his character, Nick Saban did not have time for that kind of clutter. He could’ve hired someone to speak to the fan base and recruits that way, but you’ve got to draw the line on staff sizes somewhere.
