Saturday’s sub-regional roundup: Buckhorn, UMS-Wright, Ramsay among winners

Homestanding UMS-Wright outscored Geneva 25-6 in the first quarter and rolled to a 63-33 victory in the Class 4A sub-regional round.

The Bulldogs (16-16) will play Escambia County in the South Regional semifinals on Feb. 19. Escambia ousted UMS in the postseason a year ago.

UMS coach Michael Napp said defense has been the key to the Bulldogs’ playoff run.

“We’ve been playing so well defensively,” he said. “Thirty-three points is the most we’ve given up in the postseason. Bayside only scored 21 and Orange Beach 29 (in the area tournament). We’ve just been on another level defensively, which is where we’ve been trying to get to since mid-January. It’s just taken a minute to get there.”

UMS led 41-15 at the half on Saturday and played reserves for most of the second half. Joe Lott went 4-of-4 from 3-point range and finished with 12 points to lead the way. Sims Druhan had 11 points and 8 rebounds. Jack Blackerby finished with 9.

“When you guard really well and you make 11 3s in a game, you probably win that game most of the time,” Napp said.

Senior 6-foot-8 forward Evan Griffin scored 29 of Geneva’s 33 points.

CLASS 6A

Buckhorn 70, Hartselle 43

No. 1 Buckhorn advanced to the Northwest Regional and kept hope alive for defending its 6A state title.

Fred Derrick led five Bucks in double figures with 15 points. Caleb Holt added 12. Jackson Ramsey totaled 11. Jeremiah Wilson and Josh Wilkerson each had 10.

Buckhorn coach Patrick Harding was pleased with his team’s overall performance as they improved to 25-5.

“I thought we got off to a good start,” Harding said. “Our defensive effort and intensity was what we needed to come out with. I knew that Coach (Faron) Key and Hartselle would have a good plan, and I think he’s done a great job with his team this year. They got everybody back so they’re going to be really good next year.”

Buckhorn led 13-2 at the end of the first quarter and 29-9 at halftime.

“We came in and practiced well,” Derrick said. “Coach gave us the game plan and we came out and competed.”

“For us it’s been all about coming out with energy and coming out with intensity,” Ramsey added. “When we get going on the defensive side everything else kind of falls into place.”

Rylan Smothers finished with a game-high 19 points for Hartselle (14-15). He scored 17 points in the second half, 12 in the third quarter. Ty Odom had 13.

As much as Harding complimented his players for their performance, he still saw a key area that needed to be addressed.

“We’ve got to do a better job rebounding the basketball,” Harding said. “I think as we move forward that’s going to be, whether we win a championship or not or play for a championship, it’s going to be whether we can rebound the basketball at a high level every night for four quarters.”
