Saturday NFL roundup: Touchdowns have Alabama roots
Four players from Alabama high schools and colleges scored touchdowns during the NFL’s six-game preseason schedule on Saturday, with two doing so in their first pro appearances.
Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Eli Ricks (Alabama) returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown in a 20-19 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers (Alabama) caught a 22-yard touchdown pass in a 23-19 victory over the Indianapolis Colts, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) had a 17-yard touchdown reception in a 28-23 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans quarterback Malik Willis (Auburn) had a 2-yard touchdown run in a 23-17 loss to the Chicago Bears.
Ricks and Shavers were making their pro debuts, but the touchdown also was the first as a pro for Tolbert, who was an NFL rookie last year. Willis ran for an NFL regular-season touchdown as a rookie in 2022.
They weren’t the only players with Alabama football roots to make a splash during Saturday’s NFL preseason schedule.
Jaguars running back Tank Bigsby (Auburn) ran for 52 yards on nine carries, including a 34-yard breakaway, against the Cowboys in his first pro game, Bears outside linebacker Terrell Lewis (Alabama) had two sacks, including a strip sack, against the Titans, defensive back Shyheim Carter (Alabama) led Tennessee in tackles, and Carolina linebacker Chandler Wooten did the same for the Panthers in a 27-0 loss to the New York Jets.
Sixty players from Alabama high schools and colleges got on the field during NFL preseason games on Saturday:
Buffalo Bills 23, Indianapolis Colts 19
· Colts cornerback Tony Brown (Alabama) did not play.
· Bills defensive tackle DJ Dale (Clay-Chalkville, Alabama) shared a sack in his first pro game. He also was injured on the play and went to the locker room for X-rays, although he returned to the sideline.
· Colts running back Kenyan Drake (Alabama) ran for 10 yards on five carries.
· Colts guard Emil Ekiyor (Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Bills running back Damien Harris (Alabama) did not play.
· Ryan Kelly (Alabama) started at center for the Colts.
· Bills safety Jared Mayden (Alabama) made three tackles.
· Siran Neal (Eufaula, Jacksonville State) started at cornerback for the Bills. Neal made four tackles and broke up a pass.
· Bills wide receiver Tyrell Shavers (Alabama) caught two passes for 38 yards and one touchdown in his first pro game. Shavers got loose down the left sideline and caught a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt Barkley as Buffalo took a 17-13 lead with 6:11 left in the third quarter. Shavers played for the Crimson Tide in 2018 and 2019, went to Mississippi State in 2020 and finished his college career at San Diego State in 2021 and 2022.
· Colts offensive tackle Braden Smith (Auburn) did not play.
Chicago Bears 23, Tennessee Titans 17
· Bears defensive lineman Travis Bell (Jeff Davis) made two tackles and shared a sack in his first pro game.
· Khari Blasingame (Buckhorn) started at fullback for the Bears. Blasingame had an 11-yard run and made a tackle after an interception.
· Titans defensive tackle Shakel Brown (Troy) did not record any stats. In his first pro game, Brown sustained an apparent ankle injury with 7:42 left in the third quarter and needed to be carted off the field.
· Titans defensive back Shyheim Carter (Alabama) led Tennessee with five tackles and forced one fumble. The Titans recovered the loose football at their 17-yard line with 1:08 left in the first half.
· Titans defensive back Eric Garror (McGill-Toolen) made four tackles, including two behind the line of scrimmage, and returned two punts for 26 yards in his first pro game.
· Titans running back Derrick Henry (Alabama) did not play.
· Eddie Jackson (Alabama) started at safety for the Bears. Jackson made two tackles.
· Bears wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. (Saraland) caught a 6-yard pass and returned two punts for 7 yards. Jones also had a muff that Tennessee recovered at the Chicago 25-yard line.
· Bears offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood (Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Bears outside linebacker Terrell Lewis (Alabama) recorded two sacks and forced one fumble. Chicago recovered the loose football at the Tennessee 37-yard line. It was one of the six turnovers in the second quarter.
· Titans cornerback Roger McCreary (Williamson, Auburn) did not play.
· Darnell Mooney (Gadsden City) started at wide receiver for the Bears.
· Titans linebacker Monty Rice (James Clemens) did not record any stats.
· Bears guard Logan Stenberg (James Clemens) did not play. He joined the team as a waiver claim on Friday.
· Malik Willis (Auburn) started at quarterback for the Titans. Willis completed 16-of-25 passes for 189 yards with no touchdowns and one interception and ran for 22 yards and one touchdown on three carries. He also lost a fumble. Tennessee opened the game with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that Willis ended with a 2-yard touchdown run with 7:45 left in the first quarter.
New York Jets 27, Carolina Panthers 0
· Bradley Bozeman (Handley, Alabama) started at center for the Panthers.
· Panthers guard Deonte Brown (Austin, Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Derrick Brown (Auburn) started at defensive tackle for the Panthers. Brown made three tackles.
· Panthers running Spencer Brown (Mortimer Jordan, UAB) ran for a team-high 34 yards on eight carries and also caught three passes for 4 yards.
· Bryce Huff (St. Paul’s Episcopal) started at defensive end for the Jets. Huff shared a sack.
· Jets defensive end Carl Lawson (Auburn) did not play.
· Panthers outside linebacker Eku Leota (Auburn) made two tackles and registered a quarterback hit in his first pro game.
· Jets linebacker C.J. Mosley (Theodore, Alabama) did not play.
· Panthers running back Camerun Peoples (Clay-Central) did not record any stats.
· Panthers defensive tackle LaBryan Ray (James Clemens, Alabama) made two tackles.
· Jamien Sherwood (Auburn) started at linebacker for the Jets. Sherwood made two tackles.
· Panthers defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth (Murphy) made five tackles.
· Panthers safety Josh Thomas (Montgomery Academy) made four tackles.
· Jets tight end C.J. Uzomah (Auburn) had a 6-yard reception.
· Jets linebacker Quincy Williams (Wenonah) did not play.

· Panthers linebacker Chandler Wooten (Auburn) led Carolina with seven tackles.
· Bryce Young (Alabama) started at quarterback for the Panthers. Young completed 4-of-6 passes for 21 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions. The first pick in the 2023 NFL Draft played three series in his first pro game.

Jacksonville Jaguars 28, Dallas Cowboys 23
· Josh Allen (Abbeville) started at outside linebacker for the Jaguars. Allen made one tackle.
· Jaguars running back Tank Bigsby (Auburn) ran for 52 yards on nine carries in his first pro game. Bigsby broke a 34-yard run to start a Jacksonville touchdown drive in the second quarter.
· Jaguars offensive lineman Chandler Brewer (Florence) did not record any stats.
· Jaguars outside linebacker DJ Coleman (Jacksonville State) made two tackles and registered a quarterback hit in his first pro game.
· Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs (Alabama) did not play.
· Jaguars tight end Gerrit Prince (UAB) did not record any stats.
· Calvin Ridley (Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Jaguars. Ridley caught two passes for 21 yards. Ridley was playing for the first time since Oct. 24, 2021. He was suspended last season for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.
· Jaguars offensive tackle Cam Robinson (Alabama) did not record any stats.
· Jaguars outside linebacker Jordan Smith (UAB) made five tackles and recorded one tackle for loss.
· Jaguars safety Daniel Thomas (Lee-Montgomery, Auburn) made two tackles and recovered one fumble. Thomas’ fumble recovery came at the Jacksonville 1-yard line with eight seconds left in the first quarter.
· Jalen Tolbert (McGill-Toolen, South Alabama) started at wide receiver for the Cowboys. Tolbert had two receptions for 29 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Will Grier threw a 17-yard TD pass to Tolbert for Dallas’ first points with 13 seconds left in the first half. In 2022, Tolbert had two receptions for 12 yards in eight games as a rookie.

· Darious Williams (UAB) started at cornerback for the Jaguars. Williams made one tackle.
· Jaguars offensive lineman Darryl Williams (Bessemer City) did not record any stats.
· Sam Williams (Lee-Montgomery) started at defensive end for the Cowboys. Williams recorded one tackle for loss and registered one quarterback hit.
· Jaguars wide receiver Seth Williams (Paul Bryant, Auburn) caught two passes for 23 yards.
Baltimore Ravens 20, Philadelphia Eagles 19
· Ravens cornerback Jalyn Armour-Davis (St. Paul’s Episcopal, Alabama) did not play.
· Angelo Blackson (Auburn) started at defensive tackle for the Ravens. Blackson made one tackle.
· Eagles safety Reed Blankenship (West Limestone) did not play.
· Eagles cornerback James Bradberry (Pleasant Grove, Samford) did not play.

Ricks returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown with 7:03 left to play to pull Philadephia within one point of the lead, but the Eagles failed on the subsequent 2-point conversion.

· Ravens outside linebacker Kelle Sanders (UAB) made three tackles on defense and one on special teams, recorded one tackle for loss and registered one quarterback hit in his first pro game.
· Eagles punter Arryn Siposs (Auburn) averaged 37.5 yards on two punts. Siposs had a 33-yard punt for a fair catch at the Baltimore 11-yard line and a 42-yard punt downed at the Ravens 28.
· Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith (Alabama) did not play.
· Tyler Steen (Alabama) started at left offensive tackle for the Eagles in his first pro game.
· Eagles wide receiver Quez Watkins (Athens) did not play.
Los Angeles Chargers 34, Los Angeles Rams 17
· Chargers linebacker Nathan East (McAdory, Samford) did not play.
· Chargers tight end Gerald Everett (UAB/South Alabama) did not play.
· Chargers defensive back AJ Finley (St. Paul’s Episcopal) made a tackle on special teams in his first pro game.
· Chargers long snapper Josh Harris (Auburn) handled the snaps for four punts, four extra points and two field goals.
· Chargers punter JK Scott (Alabama) averaged 43.5 yards on four punts without giving up any return yards. Scott had a 37-yard punt for a fair catch at the Chargers 45-yard line, a 45-yarder that was muffed and recovered by the Rams at their 35, a 41-yarder for a fair catch at the Rams 36 and a 55-yarder returned for no gain at the Rams 11.
· Chargers defensive end Nick Williams (Minor, Samford) did not play.
