Saturday baseball roundup: Tallassee, Valley, Oak Grove among Game 3 winners
Valley scored three runs each in the second and third innings and eliminated No. 3-ranked St. Paul’s 8-3 on Saturday in Game 3 of their Class 5A second-rounds series.
Bryson Monteith drove in two runs for the Rams (24-5). C.J. Chambley was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Jackson Sanders, Seth Hammock and Braylon Carter each had two hits.
Hammock got the win on the mound, allowing seven hits and three runs. He walked four and struck out seven. Jaxon Miller got the final out.
Edward McLeod had two hits for the Saints (23-12). Taylor O’Dell homered and Hudson Farnell drove in a run. Bay Lane gave up six runs – three earned – to take the loss.
Valley will play either Holtville or Headland in the quarterfinal next week.
CLASS 5A
Tallassee 6, Gulf Shores 4
Tallassee rallied from a 4-0 deficit in Game 3 on Saturday to eliminate No. 6 Gulf Shores.
The Tigers (20-8) scored two runs in the fourth and four in the fifth.
Brue Milner homered twice and drove in five of Tallassee’s six runs. Chase Chumley had the other RBI.
Chase Webster got the win in relief, pitching shutout baseball for 4.1 innings and allowing five hits.
Connor Gehr and John Luke Stephens each had two hits for the Dolphins (27-12). Alex Rippy gave up five runs in four innings and took the loss.
Tallassee will play No. 9 Mobile Christian next week in the quarterfinals.
CLASS 4A
Oak Grove 5, Andalusia 4 (8 innings)
Nathan Winholtz stroked run-scoring single in the eighth inning of the final game in the best-of-3 series to send Oak Grove into next week’s quarterfinal round of playoffs.
Winholtz was 3-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs, scoring twice for host Oak Grove (22-12).
His 2-out single scored pinch runner Dalton Troncalli for the win.
Weston Hyche pitched the win in relief, entering with an out in the seventh inning, striking out 3 and allowing a hit in 1 2/3 innings of work.
The Tigers scored first in the second inning on Hyche’s single that scored Brody Black, who led off the inning with a single, but Andalusia got 2 runs in the top of the third inning for a 2-1 lead.
Oak Grove’s Collin Pate doubled home Winholtz to tie the score and Olen Bryant’ RBI single gave the Tigers the 3-2 lead.
Winholtz added a run-scoring single for a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning, but Andalusia’s Parker Adams belted a solo home run to close the gap to 4-3 in the fifth. Adams was 3-for-3 with 2 RBIs and 2 runs.
Andalusia tied the game at 7-all on an error in the seventh inning to set up the game-winner by Winholtz.
Oak Grove plays American Christian in next week’s quarterfinal round.
