Saturday Baseball Roundup: Auburn knocks off Fairhope; Hillcrest, Mars Hill Bible advance
Class 7A No. 3 Auburn scored two runs each in the first and third innings and defeated Fairhope 4-1 in Game 3 of their best-of-3 three quarterfinal series on Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers (27-10) advanced to play rival and No. 4 Central-Phenix City in the semifinals for the right to play in the Class 7A championship series. The Red Devils swept Baker on Friday.
Michael Daniel hit a two-run homer in the first inning for Auburn. Tanner Waldrop and Seth Payne had back-to-back RBI doubles in the third inning. Harrison Geiger pitched a complete game to earn the victory. He allowed just three hits and a walk. He struck out six.
Rock Gearhart drove in Fairhope’s only run of the game. Jerry McDowell pitched well in a losing effort, allowing six hits and four runs and striking out three.
The Pirates finished 30-13.
CLASS 6A
Hillcrest-Tuscaloosa 7, Baldwin County 1
Jackson Henderson pitched six hitless innings and belted a two-run homer in leading Hillcrest to the quarterfinal win.
The victory sends the Patriots (28-11) into next week’s semifinal round against Spanish Fort.
Henderson gave up a hit in the seventh to Baldwin County’s Eli Woody to break up the no-hit bid while an RBI-groundout by Landen Walker ended the shutout. Henderson struck out eight and walked three, throwing 61 strikes in 94 pitches.
His two-run, two-out blast to left field started the scoring in the first and Hillcrest added a run in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Gunnar Hobson.
Two run-scoring singles by Rhett Turnipseed, one in the fifth and one in the seventh, made it 5-0 and Kahden Smith capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh.
Turnipseed was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run while Brooks Tunnell was 2-for-4 with a run. Henderson also scored twice.
Baldwin County (28-11) started the final inning with a walk, Woody’s single and hit batter. Henderson struck out the next hitter before Walker’s ground out accounted for the only run.
CLASS 2A
Mars Hill Bible 9, Vincent 2
After a scoreless first inning, eighth-ranked Mars Hill Bible scored all nine of its runs in the next two innings to upset top-ranked Vincent and advance to next week’s semifinal against Red Bay.
A two-run homer by Jaxon Poag, two-run single by Jackson Tingle and run-scoring single by Oakley Bevis gave the Panthers (25-10) a 5-0 lead in the second.
That was followed by run-scoring double by Bevis, a run-scoring single by Brooks Campbell and two-run single by Jay Dobbs for the nine-run lead in the third.
Vincent (29-6) scored two runs in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Cason Fields and RBI-groundout by Mattson Davis to end the scoring.
Jack Irby scattered five hits and struck out three while allowing no earned runs to get the win on the mound.
