Saraland track star claims top Gatorade Alabama honor

Saraland senior Morgan Davis has been named the Gatorade Alabama Girls Track & Field Athlete of the Year.

It is the second Gatorade honor for the Spartans during the 2022-2023 school year. Sophomore Ryan Williams was named the Gatorade Football Player of the Year in the state.

The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.

Davis is now a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Track & Field Player of the Year award to be announced in July.

The 5-foot-7 standout set two state records and won four individual titles at the Class 6A state meet this past season, leading the Spartans to a fifth-place finish.

She set a new Alabama standard in the high jump with a clearance of 6-feet, which ranked No. 2 nationally among girls prep competitors in 2023. She also won the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 8.25 inches, which ranked No. 4 nationally. Her state-title-winning performances in the 100- and 200-meter dashes both ranked in the nation’s top 75 this spring.

“Morgan Davis is one of only two female prep athletes in the country this season to clear 6 feet in the high jump and surpass 20 feet in the long jump,” said Erik Boal, editor at DyeStat.com, in the Gatorade release. “She set the Alabama record in both events, and she’s also one of the state’s elite sprinters.”

Davis has maintained a 3.92 GPA in the classroom. She has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete on scholarship at the University of Kentucky this fall.

Davis and Williams join former Baker star Labaron Philon (basketball) and McGill-Toolen’s Anna Grace Sparks (volleyball) as Gatorade Alabama honorees from Mobile for the 2022-2023 season. Philon announced recently he was transferring to Link Academy for his senior season.
