Saraland 5-star WR Ryan Williams recommits to Alabama
Saraland 5-star wide receiver Ryan Williams has committed to Alabama once again.
Williams, the state’s 2022 Mr. Football winner, decommitted from Alabama the day the news of Nick Saban’s retirement broke on Jan. 10. He announced he was on social media late Wednesday afternoon that he was rejoining the Tide’s 2024 class.
He visited Alabama last weekend, meeting with new head coach Kalen DeBoer and offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. He told AL.com on Monday that he had a “great visit” in Tuscaloosa.
“I’m starting to build relationships with the new guys,” Williams said. “It was a great time with them. I’m just excited to see what they have to tell me between now and Feb. 9.”
Since announcing his reclassification into the Class of 2024 in December, Williams has maintained that he plans to sign on the 9th, his 17th birthday. However, the start of the late signing period is Feb. 7.
No announcement yet on if those plans will change now.
Williams said he was struck over the weekend by “how down to earth” DeBoer is. “What you see is what you get,” he said.
He also said he had a strong first impression of Grubb.
“He was just telling me how I fit into the offense and how easy it would be carrying what I do now over to the next level,” he said.
On Tuesday, Williams canceled a scheduled visit to Texas, according to On3. He was also scheduled to visit Auburn on Feb. 2.
Williams is the top unsigned senior recruit in the nation.
During the 2023 season, he caught 71 passes for 1,320 yards and 19 TDs, rushed for 269 yards and seven scores, threw a touchdown pass and returned both a punt and kickoff for TDs. He scored 4 TDs in Saraland’s loss to Clay-Chalkville in the Class 6A title game in, ironically, Tuscaloosa’s Bryant-Denny Stadium.
Williams is the first major commitment for DeBoer since taking over for Saban.
He is ranked No. 1 on AL.com’s updated A-List of top seniors in the state and No. 6 nationally, according to the 247 composite rankings.
Williams became the state’s first sophomore Mr. Football after a standout 2022 season in which he led the Spartans to the Class 6A state title. In his breakout season, Williams caught 88 passes for 1,641 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also rushed 57 times for 700 yards and 15 TDs, threw a touchdown pass and scored on a pair of punt returns.
Williams is one of 48 player of the year finalists who will be honored Tuesday in Montgomery at the annual Alabama Sports Writers Banquet. If he were to win Mr. Football again, he would be the state’s first repeat winner in 42 years. He is a finalist for Class 6A Back of the Year along with Clay-Chalkville’s Jaylen Mbakwe — his future Tide teammate — and his Saraland quarterback, Texas junior commit KJ Lacey.
Williams already has been named Gatorade Alabama Player of the Year twice.
